St
Leonard's Churchyard
Following
the preparation of a comprehensive Conservation Management
Plan, Aileen Shackell worked with the Parish Church
Council to raise funding for the restoration of this
important Georgian churchyard at the heart of Streatham,
in south London. With some £50,000 successfully secured
from a wide range of charitable Trusts and other agencies
including Lambeth Council, a carefully focused scheme
was developed targeting the most neglected aspects of
the churchyard.
The
completed scheme included repairs to monuments; york
stone paths re-laid, new boundary fencing, and low-key
lighting alongside the paths. Anti-social behaviour
in the restored churchyard has been considerably reduced
and the site is once again an attractive green space,
and a reminder of past times when Streatham was a Surrey
village and not just a London suburb.
